How to Sew Linen Fabric — Complete Beginner Guide 2026

How to Sew Linen Fabric — Complete Beginner Guide 2026

Linen is widely considered one of the best fabrics for beginner sewists — and experienced sewists love it too. It has a natural texture that hides minor stitching imperfections, presses to a beautifully crisp finish, and produces garments that look more expensive than they are. This complete guide covers every aspect of working with linen fabric successfully. Browse our SewSimple whole shop bundle for the best linen-friendly patterns.

Why This Pattern Is Perfect for Beginners

  • Linen does not slip on the cutting table like silk or viscose
  • The natural texture hides minor stitching irregularities
  • Linen presses to an exceptionally crisp finish with steam
  • It gets softer and more beautiful with every wash
  • Even the simplest linen garment looks elevated and intentional

Step-by-Step Sewing Guide

1

Pre-wash linen twice

This is the most important preparation step. Linen can shrink up to 10% on first wash. Wash at the same temperature you will use for the finished garment — twice. Press flat after each wash before cutting.

2

Press before cutting

Linen wrinkles easily. Press all fabric pieces flat with a steam iron before laying out pattern pieces. Cutting over wrinkles produces inaccurate pieces.

3

Cut on grain — linen makes this easy

Linen's woven texture makes the grain line very clearly visible. The vertical (warp) threads should run parallel to pattern grain line arrows. Linen is one of the easiest fabrics to cut on grain precisely.

4

Finish raw edges immediately

Linen frays more than cotton. Before sewing any seams, finish all raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger to prevent fraying. Do all edges of all pieces before starting assembly.

5

Press every seam with steam

Linen responds better to steam pressing than almost any other fabric. Use a damp pressing cloth and press firmly after every seam. The difference in finish quality between pressed and unpressed linen is dramatic.

6

Use the right needle and thread

Use a sharp needle (size 80/12 for light linen, 90/14 for medium-weight) and polyester thread in a matching colour. A dull needle causes skipped stitches in linen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does linen shrink?

Yes — linen typically shrinks 5-10% on first wash. Always pre-wash your linen fabric at least twice before cutting to remove all shrinkage. Cutting unwashed linen and then washing the finished garment will leave you with a shorter, tighter garment than intended.

Is linen difficult to sew?

No — medium-weight linen is one of the easiest fabrics for beginners. It doesn't slip, cuts cleanly, and presses beautifully. The only extra consideration compared to cotton is the pre-washing requirement and the tendency to fray.

What needle size should I use for linen?

Use a sharp (Microtex) or universal needle in size 80/12 for lightweight linen and 90/14 for medium-weight. A fresh needle makes a significant difference — replace your needle every 6–8 hours of sewing time.

Can I mix linen with other fabrics?

Yes — linen mixes well with cotton, cotton lawn, and cotton-linen blends. Avoid mixing linen with fabrics that have very different washing requirements.
