The pencil skirt is the fitted skirt — a sleek, streamlined silhouette from waist to hem that creates an elegant, polished look suitable for office, smart casual, and evening wear. While slightly more challenging than an elastic waist skirt, a pencil skirt is an excellent project for a beginner who has already completed two or three simpler garments and is ready to tackle a zipper and a fitted silhouette.
This guide covers pencil skirt construction, fabric selection, the back vent technique, and the best beginner-friendly pencil skirt PDF patterns to download today. Read our guide on how to use a sewing pattern and our article on common sewing mistakes beginners make before you start.
What Makes a Pencil Skirt Different to Sew?
- Fitted silhouette — requires more accurate measuring and sizing than loose-fit garments
- Usually includes a zipper — most pencil skirts have an invisible or exposed zipper at the centre back or left side seam
- Back vent or slit — needed for walking ease since the narrow hem would otherwise restrict movement
- Interfacing required — waistband and sometimes the back vent need interfacing to hold their shape
- Fabric choice matters more — structured fabrics work beautifully; floppy or stretch fabrics require different techniques

How to Sew a Pencil Skirt — Key Steps
Interface waistband and vent facing
Interface all waistband pieces and back vent facing with medium-weight fusible interfacing. This prevents stretching and gives the waistband the structure it needs to maintain its shape during wear.
Sew back seam to vent opening
Sew the centre back seam from the waist down, stopping at the vent opening mark. Backstitch to secure. Do not sew below the vent mark — this section is folded to create the walking vent.
Install the zipper
Most pencil skirts use an invisible zipper at the centre back or left side seam. Install before sewing the complete seam. Press the zipper tape before installation for better results.
Sew side seams
Sew both side seams with right sides together. Press open. Try on the skirt and check the fit before proceeding — the fitted pencil silhouette is easier to adjust at this stage than after the waistband is attached.
Create the back vent
Fold and press the vent facing to the inside. Slip stitch or machine stitch the vent in place. The vent should lie flat and smooth, overlapping in the correct direction — check your pattern for which side overlaps which.
Attach waistband
Sew waistband to skirt waist with right sides together. Fold over, press, and stitch in the ditch from the right side to catch the underside of the waistband. Add button and buttonhole or hook and bar closure.
Hem with care
A pencil skirt hem needs to be perfectly level and even. Mark with ruler and chalk all the way around. A narrow machine hem or slip-stitched hand hem both work well on pencil skirts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pencil skirt difficult to sew?
A pencil skirt is an intermediate project — slightly more challenging than an elastic waist skirt because of the zipper, waistband, and vent. It is an excellent second or third garment project for someone who has already sewn a simpler skirt.
What is a walking vent on a pencil skirt?
A walking vent (or kick pleat) is an opening at the centre back hem of a pencil skirt that allows free movement while walking. Without it, the narrow fitted hem would restrict your stride significantly.
Can I sew a pencil skirt without a zipper?
Most pencil skirts require a zipper to step into them because the fitted waist does not stretch. If you want to avoid a zipper, choose a pencil skirt in a stretch fabric like ponte knit — then you can use an elastic waist or simply slip it over your hips.
